The Citroën Xantia was launched in the UK in March 1993 following six years of replacement for the hugely succesful BX. The Xantia had a hard act to follow.
At launch, three trim levels - X, SX and VSX were available with the VSX versions being fitted with Hydractive 2 Suspension - lesser models used the regular hydropneumatic set up. There was a choice of three petrol engines - a 1,8i, 2,0i 8v and 2,0i 16v and a brace of 1,9 diesels which were launched in June 1993 in either atmospheric or turbo charged form. 1994 saw the introduction of a 1,6i and subsequently the range was expanded to include a very tasteful break or estate, a 2,1 turbo diesel (still, alas, without an auto box), a 2,0 turbo petrol, the SC-CAR equipped Activa and the V6 which is fitted with an `intelligent' automatic gearbox that `learns' the driving style of the driver. 1995 saw the release of a Xantia Estate and also the the chevrons migrated from the bonnet to the grille. The Xantia 2,1 litre Turbo Diesel Estate was launched in 1997 as was the Xantia 2,0i SX and the 3,0 litre V6 Exclusive and 2,1 litre turbo diesel Estate. A New Facelift Xantia was launched in 1998 and Citroën has also made significant enhancements across the Xantia range including the introduction of a new "X" trim level, four airbags across the range, the extension of ABS and CD player to models not so previously equipped and the fitting of the advanced Trafficmaster system helping the driver stay on the move. The new 110 bhp turbocharged HDi engine replaces the existing 2,1 TD unit and achieves a 30% improvement in fuel economy together with a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions. For improved driveability, the HDi engine develops nearly a third more torque at lower engine speeds and produces more than 150 lb ft between 1300 and 3800 rpm. In the autumn of 1999, the 1,9 TD was replaced by a new 90 bhp version of the 2.0HDi. In 2000 A New Trim Model was intrduced for the Xantia in the UK the Xantia Forte in both hatchback or Estate and a choice of 2 engines a 1.8i 16v or a 2.0HDi 90BHP. It was introduced for the Forte Line up which wer the Saxo, Xsara and of course the Xantia. After 8 years on the Market the Xantia was discontined in 2001 and was replaced by the New Citroen C5. As of 2009 The Xantia is still being produced in Iran. |
